Up in the North, in the Himalayas in the state of Himachal Pradesh is Bir Billing, the world famous stop, which is considered as the best paragliding
site in the country and perhaps in the world (probably the second best after Lake Como in Italy). This site is surrounded by nature, Daulahdhar
mountain range, trees and forests.
Bir is located around 70 km from Dharamshala and Billing is around 84 km from Dharamshala. Launch point in Billing is at elevation of 2,400m (8500 ft) in the meadows on the top of a ridge at Billing and the landing area is in the fields at the western edge of the Tibetan Colony in Chowgan.
Best time for gliding is from March to May before the monsoon & September to November. You have option of Tandem Flights (accompanied Flights) or Joy rides.
Bir Billing will be the site for Paragliding World Cup from 24 to 31 October 2015 which will be organized under the aegis of the Paragliding World Cup Association, France. Around 150 top ranked pilots of the world would participate, beside 500 free flying pilots.
Bir is a noted centre for ecotourism, spiritual studies and meditation. Bir is also home to a Tibetan refugee settlement with several Buddhist monasteries and a large stupa.
Nearby are exotic traveller’s destinations like McLeod Ganj, where the Dalai Lama is living in exile, or Manali, from where one of the most spectacular roads in the world runs to Ladakh (also known as ‘Little Tibet’).
