In Himachal Pradesh, there are about 2000 deities which are worshipped and different fairs and festivals are held in their honour. In many parts of the Himachal the village Gods are carried on palanquins to village fairs. During these fairs and festivals, the people gather in large groups and dance on the tune of the folk songs of the Himachal. These dances symbolise the peace and joy of the people and as well as represents the true tradition and culture. Some of the festivals which are celebrated in Himachal are Baisakhi, Lohri, Gochi, Nalwari fair, Holi, Gugga fair, Fullaich Festival, Dussehra, Sui Mata Festival, Minjar Fair.
In Ladakh, the religious festivals are held in the major Buddhist monasteries. During these festivals, dance-dramas are performed by Lamas who
dress up in colourful costumes and wearing various kinds of masks. One of the most famous festival is Hemis monastery which is held in early summer and is dedicated to the life and mission of Padmasambhava, founder of Tibetan Vjarayana Buddhism. Every 12th years, a huge Thangka of the saint is ritually exhibited, hung from the front façade of the monastery. Other monasteries, which have summer festivals, are Lamayuru, Phyang, Tak-thok and Karsha (Zanskar). The monasteries of Spituk, Stok, Thikse, Chemrey and Matho have their festivals in winter between November and March.
